The Laundry Sorting Routine That Makes One Load a Day Actually Easy

Laundry is one of those background chores that never truly rests. You don’t see it happening, but you always feel it when it falls behind. With kids, clothes pile up fast: dirty pants, food-stained shirts, pajamas, and tiny socks that somehow disappear every other day. And as moms, we often carry the weight of keeping it all under control.

If you’ve been following my content, you already know that I follow a one-load-a-day laundry rhythm. It’s been such a simple, life-giving habit for me, and it keeps laundry from becoming overwhelming.

But even with the “one load a day” rhythm, something else makes the biggest difference in keeping laundry peaceful and manageable: sorting.

Sorting is the behind-the-scenes hero that makes laundry feel easy instead of chaotic. And today, I want to walk you through my complete, real-life sorting system, not a Pinterest-perfect method, not something complicated, but the exact system that is working beautifully for me in this season of motherhood.

I’m not sharing this as the “right” way. I’m sharing it as an example of how a simple, intentional system can bring peace to an area of home management that often feels overwhelming. And more than anything, I hope it encourages you to build a sorting rhythm that truly works for your home.

My Real-Life Sorting System: The 4-Section Laundry Sorter That Changed Everything

In our laundry room, we use a 4-section laundry sorter, and this is the heart of my entire process.

Here’s how ours is set up:

  • One section for my clothes
  • One section for all three kids’ clothes
  • One section for whites
  • One section for my husband’s clothes

My husband does his own laundry. He usually washes his clothes on the days he goes to soccer, and it has become a natural rhythm for him. His section on the sorter simply collects his clothes throughout the week, and I don’t manage that at all. It works so well for our home and keeps both of us in a flow that matches our schedules.

Inside the kids’ bathroom closet, we also keep a small bin where they toss their dirty clothes at night. Every few days, I bring that small hamper downstairs and empty it into the kids’ section of the laundry sorter. This keeps their bathroom from getting messy, but it also keeps the sorter flowing without me constantly running back and forth.

This system has become such a game changer because:

  • It does most of the sorting automatically
  • It prevents laundry from becoming overwhelming
  • It keeps each category of clothing contained
  • It makes the “one load a day” rhythm even easier
  • It respects the natural flow of our home
  • It’s sustainable even in busy seasons

This is the one that I got on Amazon (at the time of writing this post it was unavailable but here is a similar option).

Why Sorting Before Laundry Day Makes Everything Easier

Sorting used to be the part that stressed me out the most. I’d wait until laundry day, dump everything on the floor, and try to create piles. But because laundry is never-ending, I’d get interrupted halfway through and come back to an even bigger mess. It made everything feel heavier than it needed to be.

Sorting throughout the week, without even thinking about it, is part of what made laundry peaceful again.

Here’s why:

1. It removes the mental load

When you start laundry and everything is already in its category, laundry feels easy. You’re not fighting the pile.

2. The laundry room stays clean

No scattered piles. No mixing categories. No visual overwhelm.

3. It helps me know exactly what to wash next

If the kids’ section is full, I wash theirs.
If my section is full, I wash mine.
If the whites are full, I do a white load.

I don’t have to guess who’s running low on clothes.

4. It aligns perfectly with my one-load-a-day rhythm

Most days, one section is full enough for one load. If not, it will be within the next day or two.

5. It keeps laundry from ever becoming “too much”

Small sections = small loads = small decisions.

Laundry never feels like a mountain.

What Laundry Day Looks Like in My Home

Even though the clothes are pre-sorted into sections, I still do a very quick sort before washing. It’s not complicated at all and takes only a few seconds because I’m sorting small amounts at a time.

Here’s exactly what it looks like:

1. I grab one full section from the sorter

I always start with whichever section is full:

  • Kids
  • Mine
  • Whites

My husband washes his own clothes, so I rarely touch that section.

2. I do a quick color check

I’m not standing there for five minutes figuring out exact shades. I’m literally giving the pile a glance.

I might:

  • Pull out a darker item
  • Pull out something that should be hand washed
  • Separate a couple of lights
  • Remove a white sock

This takes seconds because the pile is small. I’m sorting maybe 10–20 items, not 70.

3. I treat stains if needed

With kids, something always needs a little extra attention:

  • pasta sauce
  • ketchup
  • yogurt
  • grass
  • berries
  • toothpaste
  • outdoor dirt

I handle what I see, and that’s it. Again, because things are already separated into their own section, stains stand out instead of getting lost in a giant pile.

4. I wash that one load

There are different laundry routines that work. I, personally, like the one load a day method. It has been working well for me in this season. I wash a load in the morning and fold them in the afternoon..

Why This System Works So Well for Our Family

1. It respects our natural flow

Laundry comes in by person, and sorting works the same way.

2. It partners perfectly with my one-load-a-day routine

I never “wonder” what to wash.
The sorter tells me.

3. It keeps household clutter low

The kids’ small hamper keeps their closet clean.
The downstairs sorter keeps the laundry room clean.

4. My husband owning his laundry helps create balance

It gives me margin.
It gives him autonomy.
It fits how our home functions.

5. It keeps laundry peaceful

Nothing about this feels rushed or overwhelming.
Laundry is simply part of the rhythm of the day—not a big project.

Encouraging You to Build a Laundry System That Fits Your Home

I never want to give moms another rule to follow or another standard to feel pressured by. We already carry enough. What I want is to show you what’s possible when you simplify, observe your home, and build a system that supports your life—not competes with it.

Your home might need:

  • individual kid hampers
  • one big family hamper
  • a two-section sorter
  • a color-only system
  • or something entirely unique

There is no “perfect” system.

There is only the system that brings you peace.

Laundry should not feel like it’s taking over your life. And you don’t need a complicated method to stay on top of it. All you need is a simple flow that matches your season, your family size, your home layout, and your capacity.

If my 4-section sorter gives you ideas, take what serves you and leave the rest. You deserve a laundry routine that supports your motherhood season.

Laundry will always be there, but it doesn’t have to control you. It doesn’t have to be stressful. And it certainly doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little intention and a simple sorting system, laundry can become just another peaceful rhythm in your day.
